CHILDREN'S CRAFTS| PLAYDOUGH

Playdoh. Let's face it, when the kids get it out, its ends up everywhere. Stuck to the table and trodden into the carpet and the colours always end up mixed into a brown blob. The kids love it though and it does keep my boys entertained for hours (no saying they are bored after 10 minutes).

The biggest problem we have is even when we store it properly, when we get it out to play it's turned hard and I'm left with 2 disappointed kiddies. So here is a simple recipe to make homemade playdough with just a few items you can find in your cupboard. I remember making this dough with my own mum as a little girl. This recipe is really easy to follow and requires no heating.

Ingredients

1 cup of flour (self-raising or plain)
1/4 cup of table salt
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons oil
a few drops of food colouring.

Method

Mix the flour and salt into a bowl.
In a separate jug, combine the water, oil and food colouring.
Add the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients, a little at a time and mixing as you go along. If the mixture is too wet, add more flour. If it's too dry, add a little water. It shouldn't be sticky either.
Mix until it forms a dough ball.
Turn the dough ball out onto the work surface and knead until soft and completely mixed.
You shouldn't be able to see any flour and the colour should be even.
Now your dough is ready to play with!

We get out the pastry cutters and the rolling pin. We also use this dough to play with the official Playdoh toy sets we own and it works just as good as the real stuff.
And, let's be honest here, it doesn't matter if you buy the official Playdoh or you make your own at home, it always ends up in a multi-coloured ball anyway.
