With it being school half term in 2 weeks time, it can become quite expensive keeping children occupied.
As parents, we sometimes feel we have to be make big plans to keep our children happy. We all love a bit of money saving so this is my top 5 ideas for a budget friendly half term.
1. Baking
My boys love baking. From the mixing of the ingredients to licking the spoons at the end. There are plenty of free and simple recipes online, but one of my favourite things to buy is a cake mix. I usually pick them up for around the £1 mark in various supermarkets. The dry ingredients come already weighed out so all you add is the wet ingredients. Next, you add the mixture into the included cake cases and pop in the oven. The box includes cake toppers so you can decorate your cakes and are available in a large range of characters.
2. Day Outdoors
Why not spend a day exploring in the fresh air, whether that be in your local park, woods or even children's farms. We live in Birmingham and there is Sheldon Country Park, with a small free farm. There are a selection of animals to see, a play park and a nice walk over to the airport to watch the planes. I've lived in Birmingham for 10 years and only recently discovered this place, so it might be worth having a look if there is anything similar near to you.
Don't worry about the wet and mud. Sometimes its nice to just go with it. Put wellies on the kids and let them walk in puddles. When you get home you can warm up with a nice cup of tea.
3.Local Library
Why not have a day out at a free museum, art gallery or your local library. Many libraries hold free half term activities. If there a none planned, why not sign up for a library card. It's free and you can borrow the books to read at home. My eldest son loves reading but sometimes gets bored of the books we have at home so he likes to go and choose his own books to borrow and we read together at home.
4. Duvet Day
There is so much rushing around during term time so why not have a day where you do nothing. You don't have to spend everyday filled with activities. Stay in your pjs. and just snuggle up on the sofa, watching movies, eating snacks and just chill out. If there are things to do around the house like washing and cleaning, you could use this day to get them done. The kids will be occupied while you are loading the washing machine and you can join them whilst waiting for the machine to finish.
5. Soft Play
If you want to escape the house for a few hours but the weather is too miserable, why not take them to an indoor soft play centre. Prices vary but many of them charge a reasonable amount. The kids get run around and let off steam for a couple of hours and if you go after lunch you can avoid expensive café prices. By the end of the afternoon, once you're all home and eaten dinner, the kids will be so tired after all that climbing they will be ready for an early
night in bed.
I hope that's given everyone a few ideas to keep the kids busy during half term.
